Knowledge Sharing: Learn more about DSOs
DSO Entity engages with its members and partners to identify, collect and share best practices related to grids and core expertise areas as part of its mandate outlined in Art. 55 of Regulation (2019/943/EU).
Knowledge Sharing
An opportunity for DSO Entity’s members
With a member base of over 250 million connections from DSOs in all 27 Member States covering nearly 100% of the EU, DSO Entity strives to develop into a dedicated platform for DSOs of all sizes and shapes.
It further aims to share and exchange best practices and expertise and raise awareness on the role and relevance of DSOs in the energy system to EU institutions, partners and stakeholders.
Within DSO Entity, DSOs can exchange about technical topics and increase their understanding of EU-level developments by:
Exchanging concrete practices implemented within companies and countries to find collective solutions addressing the energy and digital transition’s challenges.
Collecting and comparing DSO and country facts and figures to sketch what is happening in the EU-27

Concentration of electricity DSOs
Very high
One DSO company
High
One dominant DSO (more than 80% of distributed power) and several local DSOs
Medium
A mix of DSOs, with the three largest accounting for more than 60% of distributed power
Low
Mainly small, local DSOs. The three largest DSOs usually deliver less than 50% of distributed power
Length of the electricity distribution grid
10 000 - 200 000 km

DSO Map’s data
- National datasets have been collected by DSO Entity’s Country Expert Group and relate to electricity DSOs in the European Union.
- Concentration of electricity DSOs taken from Eurelectric, “Grids for Speed Report”, 2024. Available online.
- Please note the percentage displayed for the roll-out of smart meters in Bulgaria is an estimate and refers, in the absence of legal definition of smart meter functionalities, to meters supporting smart metering.
